What you will learn
In this series of tutorials we will learn how to create HDRI environments for 3D lighting and use them in Maya and V-Ray to light a 3D asset.Throughout the training we will cover the whole lighting process and creating a complete shot from scratch. We will start shooting HDRI on set and we will finish the final shot in NUKE, integrating a 3D asset in a real environment. By the end of this tutorial you will be able to shot your own HDRI panoramas and create 3D light rigs to light your own projects.

Throughout these lessons we will cover the entire process of creating of a simple game asset and focus on topics involving low-poly modeling, UV-Layout and proper UV-sizing. We will start by creating a high-poly asset where we will talk about techniques that are very useful for these types of projects. This workflow can save time as well as gain the quality and originality desired for the prop. We will then use built-in Maya tools to bake ambient occlusion and normal maps, export UVs to Photoshop and begin the texturing process.

We will use Marmoset Toolbag to quickly visualize the texture on the model, check lighting, reflections, specular and other maps. Finally we will be using photo-textures that we will sample
for color and generate masks to fill and produce a unique texture as a result  . In the end you will have a professional workflow to create any game asset you will need in the future.

When texturing game assets, often times there are several challenges to overcome and variables to consider. In this course, we will talk about some of these as we walk through texturing a character for the current generation of game consoles. After setting up our Photoshop file, we’ll get started painting the color map for our character. Using a combination of painting techniques and layer styles, we’ll focus first on his clothing but eventually move to the other areas of the character including his skin, hair and a pass of dirt to make our character feel more natural. After finishing off the color map, we’ll move on and learn how we can quickly create a specular map for our character by repurposing many of our color textures. To wrap this course up, we will learn how to paint a transparency map that can be used to mask portions of the hair geometry for our game character. After finishing this course, you will not only have a fully textured game character but you’ll also have a good idea how to overcome many of the challenges that come with this type of project.

Photoshop has been able to work with three dimensional objects for several versions now. In fact, you can even create your own simple 3D objects by extruding them right inside of Photoshop. We will utilize this approach in this course where we work from start to finish to realize our concept. We’ll get started with this project by setting and extruding our type right inside of Photoshop. If you’ve never used the 3D tools in Photoshop, you’ll get a crash course here. After positioning our type, we’ll weigh the pro’s and con’s of using a traditional texturing workflow vs manipulating our bus textures on top of the type. After deciding on the photo-manipulation route, we’ll focus on fitting two different two-dimensional images to our 3D text. We will learn not only learn how to transform our images into place but we will also learn how to color correct them and nest them neatly into our base image using a variety of tools and techniques. By the end of this course, you can expect to have learned a workflow that will help you to realize a concept that integrates 3D type into a 2D image, all right here in Photoshop.
